The President Have Some Explanation To Give - Yobe State Governor

Find below statement by Yobe state Governor through his special adviser on press affairs...

"This morning, our state woke up to a very sad and heart-breaking news of a bomb attack on our young students at Government Comprehensive School, Potiskum, in which no fewer than 35 students were killed and many more injured. The thoughts of His Excellency, Governor Ibrahim Gaidam and his prayers are with the parents, teachers and families of the innocent victims of this callous and reprehensible attack.

The governor is heartbroken and words cannot adequately convey the extent of his remorse and sadness. The governor has noted that this is the fifth time in a little over one year when our schools in Yobe State were brutally attacked and students killed. There was Government Secondary School, Damaturu; Government Secondary School Mamudo; College of Agriculture, Gujba; Federal Government College, Buni-Yadi; and now Government Comprehensive School, Potiskum. Governor Gaidam deeply regrets that all of these dastardly attacks took place under a climate of Emergency Rule declared in Yobe, Borno and Adamawa States by President Goodluck Jonathan.

In theory, the Emergency Rule Declaration was a signal that more vigorous steps would be taken to protect the lives and property of people in the affected states and deploy the full might of the federal government to restore peace and security.
Unfortunately, this has not been fully the case. Instead of forcing insurgents and criminals to flee, the insurgents are forcing innocent people to flee and making life miserable for everyone. Governor Gaidam believes that President Goodluck Jonathan has a very urgent responsibility to explain to the people of Yobe State and people all across the affected states why murderous and callous insurgent and criminal attacks are still on the rise despite the State of Emergency.”

Photos Of Boko Haram Controlled Town

The picture below is taken from a new purported Boko Haram video released by the sect and obtained exclusively by AFP.

It shows Boko Haram fighters parading with about three tanks in an unidentified town they had apparently taken over. I haven't seen the video but it looks like the guys at PM News have.

Below is how they reported it...
It was not possible to tell whether the footage was staged for propaganda purposes, especially scenes of residents cheering Islamist fighters. The message appeared to be aimed at reinforcing Shekau’s claim that he has created a caliphate within Nigeria.
In the 44-minute video, Boko Haram voices support for other so-called caliphates, including the one proclaimed in Iraq and Syria by the Islamic State (IS) group. Shekau, who is pictured in close-up shots with rare clarity, again dismisses government claims about ceasefire talks and threatens to kill the man who has presented himself as Boko Haram’s negotiator.

The video, which was delivered through the same channels as past messages, shows armed men lined along a well-paved road, with three pick-up trucks equipped with heavy weapons also visible. Black, crested flags associated with the Islamist group are also shown. Later, an armoured vehicle is driven down the road lined with both fighters and individuals who appear to be residents of the town.
Boko Haram has released a series of videos showing similar military hardware, equipment it says was stolen from the Nigerian military. Such claims have been impossible to verify. No women or girls are seen on the street or anywhere else in the footage. Most of the message is taken up by a sermon from Shekau, delivered indoors but apparently played on a speaker to locals assembled outside.

"We have indeed established an Islamic caliphate,” he said, restating a call he first made in August. The images of the sermon include unusually clear close-ups of Shekau, who in past videos has often been shown at a distance, sometimes in grainy footage. – ‘Support for Islamic brethren’ – Shekau has previously expressed solidarity with other jihadi groups and leaders, including the IS militants.

In the latest video, he seemed to associate territory under his control with a wider, global caliphate, but did not submit to the authority of any other jihadi leader. To everyone living in Islamic Caliphate, we convey our greetings,” he said, specifically mentioning “brethren” in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Shishan (an Islamist term for Chechnya), Yemen, Somalia and “the Caliphate in Iraq and Syria.

” A graphic shown later includes a picture the IS group’s leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi as well as a portion of the message his group issued on July 1 proclaiming a caliphate in Iraq and Syria.

A teacher and a medic told AFP:

"The students had gathered for the morning assembly when something exploded in their midst with a thunderous sound‎ at exactly 7:50 am (0650 GMT). The explosion has affected many students but I can't say how many because we are now evacuating the victims to the hospital which is just 100 metres (yards) away," the teacher added, sobbing. A medic at the Potiskum General Hospital where the victims were taken said scores of students had been admitted.

"We are still receiving casualties from the school which is a stone's throw from here. Our priority now is to save the injured, so we have not started a headcount of the victims.

Heads of state of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) are going to meet today regarding Ebola at an amazing summit in Ghana’s capital, Accra.

Ebola
High on the agenda is talk over dealings to make sure a quiet transition and replenishment of democratic rule in Burkina Faso, as well as having another look at efforts to contain the outbreak of Ebola in parts of West Africa, according to Haruna Warkani, a spokesman for ECOWAS.

“The two main problem on the schedule are struggle with the outbreak of the Ebola, the control, the efforts so far made, the achievements and the challenges that are still exceptional, and then of course the unfortunate growth in Burkina Faso,” said Warkani.

They compete that while the African Union claimed in an challenge that the military leader Zida hand over power within two weeks to a civilian authority, a team of West African leaders that come across with leaders in Burkina Faso said it could take up to a year before elections could be prearranged.

First Consultant CMD Recounts Experience Since Hospital Was Reopened

The Chief Medical Director of the First Consultant Hospital where the first case of Ebola was diagnosed in Nigeria, says as an organization, they are struggling to Survive after reopening for business last month.

In an interview with Tribune yesterday, Dr Benjamin Ohiaeri said himself, his staff and their families still face firsthand stigmatization even after being certified free of the Ebola virus

"Since re-opening, we have witnessed firsthand what it means to be stigmatized. At a time when you would think we would be appreciated for our professionalism in containing Ebola, we are enduring a significant depletion in patient-turn up. We are down on numbers by a factor of about 90%. But for the generosity of friends and family, Aledo Peterside, Tunde Ayeni, Diamond Bank, etc., this business would have collapsed. Even now, we are struggling to stay afloat. It has been very tough indeed."

"The loss of Dr Adadevoh, Dr Abaniwo, Evelyn Uko and Ejelonu, four key members of our team, the first two of who were the most senior of our medics and members of the Hospital Executive Committee, has been hard. They were colleagues, they were family. We are talking of a lifetime of working as a close team - as confidantes, as family. So, yes it’s been very tough. As well as our fallen heroes, we have many of the survivors here. Medics, who placed their lives on the line to avoid Ebola spreading to the general public; they suffered the trauma of threats to their lives and the horror of rejection, in many cases, simply because they once had Ebola. The families of our people have suffered horrendous victimisation too. Children of the dead hounded out of rented homes just when they needed compassion; the husband of a sufferer thrown out of his job simply because the employer learned of his wife’s condition. The pain, the suffering, the horror goes on and on. Still, our people are back at work, doing what they do best - caring for the ill. For the hospital, we are inching back to life. As you know, the place was shut down for nearly three months while it was decontaminated by the WHO. So, our business was essentially shut in all that time, though our expenses, salaries, among others, continued to run" he said.
