Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko Dumps LP For PDP

Olusegun Mimiko has finally decamped to PDP, just like former Ogun Sate Governor, Gbenga Daniel recently did.

He was received by Vice President Namadi Sambo on behalf of President Goodluck Jonathan at a brief ceremony held inside the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa. Mimiko was joined by members of his cabinet, LP lawmakers from the state in the National Assembly and 25 members of the state House of Assembly.

The Governor who said he decided to join PDP because of the interest of Ondo people and Nigerians at large said that, his immediate target was to ensure that President Goodluck Jonathan was re-elected. He promised to spearhead the process by creating “a solid and robust platform of involvement in the re-election of the president”.

First Case of Ebola Recorded in New york

A US doctor based in New York who recently returned from treating Ebola patients in Guinea has become the first person in the city to test positive for Ebola. 33 year old Dr. Craig Allen Spencer  had been working with Doctors Without Borders in Guinea, and returned to NYC on October 17th.

He tested positive to the virus the Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan New York yesterday October 23rd. He and three other people he had contact with in recent days, including his girlfriend have been placed in isolation at the Bellevue hospital.

Dr Spencer is officially the 4th person to test positive on American soil. Many are alarmed at this new case due to the population of the city but the New York mayor while confirming the recent case said New Yorkers have nothing to fear "We want to state at the outset, there is no reason for New Yorkers to be alarmed. Ebola is a very hard disease to contract." Mayor Bill de Blasio said

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen To Donate 100m Dollars To Fight Ebola

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, 61, announced today October 23rd that he will donate $100 million to the fight against Ebola, which has killed thousands of people in Africa and all around the world.
This donation makes him the largest individual donor in the Ebola crisis so far.

"Everybody feels called sometimes to really pursue a certain thing that resonates with them, and this has resonated with me. We’re up against an extremely tough opponent here. The exponential nature of the growth of this disease is really a challenge - we’ve already seen in the U.S. where one case quickly became two.” Allen told NY Times.Paul Allen is worth about 17m Dollars.

Boko Haram Abducts 60 Women In Adamawa

Suspected members of the deadly Boko Haram sect have reportedly abducted sixty women during a fresh attack.

Forty of the women were said to have been abducted in Waga Mangoro and the other 20 were forcefully taken away from Grata, both in troubled Adamawa State.

PUNCH reports that some of the fleeing residents from the area, who called journalists in Yola on the telephone lamented that scores of insurgents riding motorcycles and driving vans had invaded their towns. That they were able to sneak out of the captured towns on Tuesday, but that their villages were ravaged on Saturday.

One of those that was about to flee the area, Tizhe Kwada told journalists that the area had been under the control of the insurgents for about two months now. Kwada claimed that the insurgents cordoned off the entire town and went from one house to another in Garta in search of young women who they took in their vans to an unknown destination. He said:
“The insurgents are still in the area. And they have slaughtered many men in Garta and abducted many young women. We also heard from residents of Wagga that they killed two men and took 40 women away from there.

” A community leader from Michika, a neighbouring town to the two attacked towns, Emmanuel Kwache, while confirming the incident to journalists in Yola on Wednesday said: “I got the information from villagers in the area that the rampage was still in progress.

” As of the time of filing the story, Punch says both the military and security agencies could not be reached for confirmation.

BREAKING: New York City Doctor Tests Positive For Ebola Virus

A doctor in New York City who recently returned from treating Ebola patients in Guinea has become the first person in the city to test positive for the virus.

The 33-year-old doctor — identified by US media as Craig Spencer — has been placed in isolation, in what is the fourth case of Ebola diagnosed in the United States and the first outside Texas.
The patient had arrived back in America after working with Ebola patients in West Africa.
He arrived at John F. Kennedy International airport on Oct. 17 and went through the screening for travelers from the worst-hit West African countries, officials said.
But on Thursday, he developed a 103-degree Fahrenheit (39.4 Celsius) fever, nausea, pain and fatigue. He was rushed to New York's Bellevue Hospital, a few hours later, tests confirmed the worst: Spencer has Ebola.

New York City health department detectives are now tracing his movements and officials stressed there was no cause for alarm in the dense city of 8.4 million residents. His fiancée and two friends, with whom he has been in close contact, have been quarantined, New York City health commissioner Mary Bassett told a news conference.

Photos: EFCC Recovers Blind Teacher's N550,000 From Fraudsters

Relief came for a blind teacher, Mary Ihekanacho on Wednesday October 22, 2014 as the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, presented her with a draft of N550, 000 which the anti- graft agency recovered from a gang of fraudsters that swindled her of N 830,000 in a job scam. 

The syndicate conned the woman by promising to facilitate her son’s employment with one of the oil majors.  Mr. David Iloyanomo who made the presentation on behalf of the Executive Chairman of EFCC, Mr. Ibrahim Lamorde, said that
“the EFCC stands for justice for all and called on the general public to ensure that they assist the Commission in carrying out its duties by coming forward to give evidence in court when it is required”.

He also praised the passion with which officers of the Commission handled the matter which made it possible to get justice for Mrs. Ihekanacho.  An overwhelmed Mrs. Ihekanacho commended the EFCC for coming to her rescue.

“I had lost hope. I prayed and asked God to take control and was surprised when Richard called me and told me that the young man has been arrested”. She called on Nigerians to support the EFCC in its effort to rid the nation of fraudulent activities. 
“If someone can scam a blind woman, what else won’t that person do?” she asked. It would be recalled that Ihekanacho, sometime in July 2012, fell into the hands of some fraudsters led by Gift Onyegam who defrauded her of the sum of eight hundred and thirty thousand naira (N830, 000.00).

Following her petition, Onyegam was arrested and arraigned on a 4-count charge of obtaining money by false pretence before Justice M. L. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court, Enugu. On February 24, 2014, Justice Shuiabu convicted and sentenced Onyegam to ten years imprisonment without option of fine.
The court also ordered the convict to pay the victim, the sum of N711, 000 (seven hundred and eleven thousand naira) in restitution.

Boko Haram Abducts 60 Women in Adamawa

60 women were abducted by members of Boko Haram during fresh attacks at Waga Mangoro and Garta villages, both in Adamawa State this past Saturday October 18th.
Residents of the villages who confirmed the abductions to reporters said the sect men came in motorcycles in the early hours of Saturday morning, killed many, burnt down their homes and abducted 40 women from Waga Mangoro village and 20 women from Garta village. Resident of Garta community who confirmed the recent abductions told reporters;

“The insurgents are still in the area. They slit the throats of three men in Garta and abducted many young women. We also heard from residents of Waga that they killed two men and took 40 women away,” he said Ahmadu, a resident in Waga Mangoro who also confirmed the abduction said the Boko Haram members used the abducted women as human shields during reprisals by Nigerian troops.
He added that the attackers took with them food items, animals and household items belongings of villagers.

In a related development, members of the House of Representatives yesterday October 22nd approved the $1bn loan President Jonathan had requested for to enable the military purchase more weaponry.

President Goodluck Jonathan has finally indicated his interest to contest for the office of President of Nigeria in the 2015 presidential election scheduled for February 14, 2015.

He named Bello Haliru as head of the committee for his re-election declaration.

Corp Members To Receive Daily Feeding Allowance

The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that corp members will now receive N500 daily feeding allowance.
