President Museveni Of Uganda Mocks President Jonathan

Uganda’s President, Yoweri Museveni while speaking at campaign rally yesterday mocked President Jonathan for accepting foreign assistance to help fight Boko Haram.
The former guerrila fighter said he would rather commit suicide than ask the international community to protect his people against terrorists “

I have never called the United Nations to guard us. Me, Yoweri Museveni to say that I have failed to protect my people and I call on the UN: I would rather hang myself.

We prioritized national security by developing a strong Army, otherwise our Uganda would be like DRC, South Sudan, Somalia or Nigeria where militias have disappeared with school children. “It would be a vote of no confidence in our country and citizens if we cannot guarantee our security. What kind of persons would we be?” He said

Abandoned Car Causes Bomb Scare In Abuja,

The serene atmosphere of Kubwa, a satellite town in Abuja, was today punctured as a bomb scare made traders scamper for safety.  The incident occurred at about 1.00pm at  El- Rufai Bus Stop, near a crowded market, also forced parents to fetch their wards from schools leading to closure of both private and public school .

SaharaReporters gathered that a Volkswagen Gulf car had been sighted parked near the bus stop for a very long period of time with gas cylinders in it, without anybody claiming ownership of the vehicle leading to public suspicion.

A resident who pleaded anonymity told journalists that people soon started running helter-skelter in the belief the car contained a bomb that might go off at any time.
He said the tension was aggravated when some policemen who came to check the car left without any word on its status, and soon, all roads to the scene were closed as panic set in. When SaharaReporters visited Agabi Godiri, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of the Zonal Command Headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force Phase 4, he said he received a call that a car which contained gas cylinders was parked near the El-Rufai Bus Stop near the market.
He said he drove to the place himself and upon seeing the vehicle, quickly called EOD (Anti-Bomb Disposal). “They came and screened the vehicle and was discovered that it was an empty gas cylinder and no explosive device was found and nobody come around to claim the vehicle and I asked my officers to tow the vehicle to the station since we cannot locate the owner,” he explained.

He added that the owner later came to the station and it was discovered that he was a trader who sells gas cylinders and his vehicle had broken down and he parked the car to get mechanic to fix it.  “So it was not a bomb, it was just rumor and we commend people for being vigilant,” Mr. Godiri said, calling on the public to remain calm and to discountenance the hoax. As of the time of filling this report, the car was still in the police station, but the DPO promised to release it to its owner as soon as he obtained a directive to that effect.

President Jonathan's Quote To Protesters Of #BringBackOurGirls

President Jonathan in Abuja yesterday told #BringBackOurGirls protesters to direct their anger at Boko Haram and not at the government.

He spoke through the Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory, Olajumoke Akinjide, who addressed the protesters;

“We must be careful not to politicize the campaign against terrorism. When a bomb goes off in Kabul, Afghanistan, the people of Afghanistan do not blame the government, they blame the terrorists.

“When a bomb goes off in Baghdad, Iraq, the people of Iraq do not blame the government, they blame the terrorists.

When a bomb goes off in Islamabad, Pakistan, the people of Pakistan do not blame the government, they blame the terrorists.

When a bomb goes off in Nigeria, we must all unite to fight the terrorists."

Defence HQ Press Release: Nigerian Troops Were Not Involved In Alleged Genocide in Borno

DEFENCE HEADQUARTERS
MINISTRY OF DEFENCE
P M B 309 GARKI - ABUJA
DHQ/ABJ/901/32/DDI
22 May 2014 KILLING FIELD IN BORNO:

NIGERIAN TROOPS NOT INVOLVED

The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has found the latest allegation of genocide against the Nigerian military by a Kaduna based cleric as not only diversionary but unfortunate. The DHQ wishes to unequivocally dissociate the Nigerian military from any involvement in the alleged genocide as depicted in the graphic pictures which appeared in the front page of Blueprint newspapers of 22 May 2014 edition entitled, “Alleged Killing field in Borno”.

While the military will continue to respect freedom of expression of Nigerians, it will not submit to desperate blackmail and propaganda aimed at diverting attention and pitching public opinion against the armed forces. Although the real motive of the report and presentation with the apparent intention to impute military complicity in the event depicted in the pictures is yet to unfold, the DHQ sees this allegation as the manifestation of yet another grand design to tarnish and denigrate the image of Nigerian Armed Forces.

The Nigerian military remains a professional force whose operations is guided by high standard of professional ethics and will not be party to such dastardly act. At no time or event in the course of the counter-insurgency operation have the troops embarked on the extra-judicial killing of civilians as exhibited in the gory pictures. The location and occasion where the events captured in the pictures were taken is unknown and has no bearing whatsoever as insinuated in the report by the Blueprint newspaper.

The individual holding stick which the paper mischievously described as “a soldier stand(ing) guard…” is certainly not a Nigerian soldier neither is any of those captured in the pictures. The media are once again advised not to make themselves available to those who are desperate to tarnish the good name of the Nigerian Armed Forces.

Governor Akpabio Demands N200Million Annual Pay,Mansion

Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa Ibom State has, according to a report on PremiumTimes, allegedly initiated a law to enable him pocket a whooping N200 million in annual pay after his tenure expires.

Mr. Akpabio is  also demanding other benefits including a new house, brand new cars, furniture and luxurious living for the rest of his life. The controversial law, which was exclusively obtained by PREMIUM TIMES, is known as Akwa Ibom State Governors and Deputy Governors Pension Bill 2014.

If passed by the assembly, the bill would repeal the Governors and Deputy Governors Pension Law, 2006. To underscore the urgency of the proposed law, the Governor has allegedly indicated that he wanted it passed hurriedly so it could come into force on June 1.

Boko Haram Blacklisted By UN

The United Nation Security Council committee yesterday May 22nd blacklisted Islamic sect Boko haram after the Nigerian government made a request asking for the sect to be blacklisted.

A statement released by the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, Samantha Power says the motive  was to starve the Book Haram members of funding "Today, the Security Council took an important step in support of the government of Nigeria’s efforts to defeat Boko Haram and hold its murderous leadership accountable for atrocities.

By adding Boko Haram to the U.N.’s 1267 (al Qaeda) sanctions list, the Security Council has helped to close off important avenues of funding, travel and weapons to Boko Haram, and shown global unity against their savage actions,” With this blacklisting, it makes it an offence for any country or individual to provide any form of support to Boko Haram. The group is now subject to an international asset freeze, travel ban and arms embargo.

30 Lessons To Learn From Mark Zuckerberg On His 30th Birthday

Today is Mark Zuckerberg’s 30th birthday. Whether you love or hate him, you have to admit that Zuck has done a great deal for the Internet. At just 30 years old, he’s worth more than $24.5 billion, making him the youngest billionaire in the world. But all of his success didn’t come without hard work, dedication and a ton of mistakes. To celebrate Zuck’s 30th, here are 30 lessons you can learn from Facebook’s founder:

1. Passion over everything
Zuckerberg is famous for saying, “Find that thing you are super passionate about. A lot of founding principles of Facebook are that if people have access to more information and are more connected, it will make the world better; people will have more understanding, more empathy. That’s the guiding principle for me. On hard days, I really just step back, and that’s the thing that keeps me going.”

2. Do the most important thing you could be doing
Zuckerberg constantly worries about whether he’s doing the most important thing he could be doing. He says, “the question I ask myself like almost every day is, ‘Am I doing the most important thing I could be doing?’… Unless I feel like I’m working on the most important problem that I can help with, then I’m not going to feel good about how I’m spending my time. And that’s what this company [Facebook] is.”

3. Remember, success doesn’t come first
Before Zuckerberg left Harvard, he created “Facesmash,” a site that judged how attractive students were based on their dorm directory photos. It didn’t really go over well with the students and faculty, but catalyzed Zuck’s drive to try something new with Facebook.

4. Never accept the first offer
Before Zuckerberg took Facebook public in 2012, he had many, many opportunities to sell the company. He stuck to his guns and believed in what he was doing. This dedication propelled him into the successful businessman he is today.

5. Be prepared to take criticism
Facebook hasn’t been free from setbacks. There have been countless lawsuits, bans in certain countries and other negative feedback that would have scared off even the shrewdest of CEOs. Not Zuckerberg.  Through determination and thick skin, Zuckerberg and his team have remained strong in the face of adversity, mindful of the hazards and hopeful in their ability to maneuver around any challenge that comes their way.

6. Set personal challenges for yourself
Each year Zuck sets a personal challenge for himself. In 2010, he learned Mandarin Chinese so he could communicate with his then-girlfriend’s family. In 2011, he pledged only to eat animals that he slaughtered himself. This year, he’s pledged to write a thank you note every day.

7. If you aren’t breaking things,
you aren’t moving fast enough Before Facebook “grew up,” the company’s motto was, “Move fast and break things.” Zuck says, “We place a really big premium on moving quickly. One of the big theories that I had about that, was that all technology companies, and probably all companies, just slow down dramatically as they grow. But if we can focus at every step along the way on moving quicker … then we’ll move as quickly as a company that only has 500 people, because we’ve invested so much in building up the infrastructure and tools and also the culture that tells people to take risks and try things out.

8. Let people underestimate you
Zuckerberg said, “This is a perverse thing, personally, but I would rather be in the cycle where people are underestimating us. It gives us latitude to go out and make big bets that excite and amaze people.”

9. Stay humble
Despite being the youngest billionaire, Zuck didn’t just run out and buy fancy things. Instead, he focused on growing his company. Up until very recently, Zuck drove a relatively inexpensive Acura and didn’t splurge on a multi-million dollar home, he opted for a place close to Facebook’s campus.

10. Partner with people that complement your skills
Back when Zuck used to personally hire people at Facebook, he said, “We look for people who are passionate about something. In a way, it almost doesn’t matter what you’re passionate about. What we really look for when we’re interviewing people is what they’ve shown an initiative to do on their own.”

11. Give back
In 2013, Zuckerberg was the top philanthropist of the year, donating $990 million to charity.

12. Dream big
Not many believe that their college dorm side project will turn into one of the biggest sites on the Internet. Today, Facebook has over one billion users and is a huge part of millions of people’s lives. If you don’t dream big, you’ll never achieve your goals.

13. Be exclusive Exclusivity is a good thing.
When Facebook first launched in 2004, it was only available to students at ivy league schools. This caused students at other colleges from all over the country to want to become part of this exclusive club. By keeping the site exclusive, Zuck made sure that supply was never larger than demand and that Facebook remained a highly sought after prize.

14. Don’t be intimidated by competition Back
when Facebook first launched, it had a ton of competition. All of the competitors were in a better position than Facebook, Myspace had five million users and Friendster has just raised $13 million. Instead of giving up, Zuck continued to work hard and improve his platform. In the end, look who came out on top.

15. Think long term
“Zuckerberg understands the power of passion and the right attitude. Sometimes Facebook hires people just to have the right talent on board, and later on matches up their passions to the projects that they are best suited to work on,” says Ekaterina Walter, author of “Think Like Zuck.”

16. Don’t give up
During Facebook’s first summer, before investors, Zuckerberg needed money to keep going. His parents encouraged him to not give up and pitched in $85,000 to keep the startup afloat.

17. Make mistakes
Zuckerberg said, “So many businesses get worried about looking like they might make a mistake, they become afraid to take any risk. Companies are set up so that people judge each other on failure. I am not going to get fired if we have a bad year. Or a bad five years. I don’t have to worry about making things look good if they’re not. I can actually set up the company to create value.”

18. Take risks
Typically, when you first start a company, you’ll meet and talk with anyone who will listen. Zuckerberg did the opposite when he was first raising money for Facebook. He shunned major investors, ignored phone calls and canceled meetings, just to drive up demand. Eventually, he had 12 large investment companies, all fighting to fund his site. While most people would have been too scared of missing out on an opportunity, Zuckerberg and the rest of the Facebook team believed in their product enough to wait it out.

19. Hire people you would work for yourself
Zuckerberg has learned a lot about picking good people to work for him. He says, “overtime what I figured out was that the only actual way to let someone analyze whether someone was really good was if they would work for that person …”

20. Money isn’t everything
Before Facebook began making money, Zuckerberg said, “Simply put, we don’t build services to make money; we make money to build better services.”

21. Build a good team Zuckerberg on teamwork:
“One definition that I have for a good team is a group of people that makes better decisions as a whole than would individually make as a sum of the parts.” Zuckerberg adds that “when building a team you want to think about the dynamics so that way you can maintain this property that the team makes better decisions as a group than any individual would.”

22. Lockdown when you think the competition is getting ahead of you.
In Facebook’s earlier years Zuckerberg said, “whenever any other company gets ahead of us on something that we think is strategic to us … we literally did not leave the house until we had addressed the problem, now it’s a little looser of an interpretation … we don’t literally lock everyone inside the office, but about as close to that as we can legally get. It’s like ‘alright there’s some competitor that has something that we feel like we really need we’re going into lockdown to get this thing because we’re not going to let (a competitor or disrupter) get ahead of us.”

23. You’re not as good or as bad as people say
Keep in mind that you’re not as good as people say, and you’re not as bad as people say. Zuckerberg has said in the past that if Facebook is hitting a rough patch with the media and outsiders, he’ll remind the member of his team that they’re not as bad as the press says they is. When Facebook is being praised, he’ll remind his team members that they’re not as good as people say they are. Find the equilibrium.

24. Don’t get talked out of anything you strongly believe in
Remember when Facebook Newsfeed first launched? Everyone hated it. The backlash upset many Facebook users. Instead of caving and returning things to the way they were, Zuckerberg stood his ground. Today, Newsfeed is one of the most important Facebook features.

25. Stay on top of your industry
Zuckerberg pays close attention to what’s going on in the tech industry. He’s constantly researching and always has his eye out for ways to make Facebook better. Instead of always making products in-house, sometimes he has to buy companies. That’s what happened when he got Instagram for $1 billion and WhatsApp for $19 billion.

26. Treat the people working for you well
Zuck understands that if people aren’t happy, they won’t want to work hard. At Facebook HQ, employees get a lot of perks. From free food, to free computer accessories and even an on-site barber shop, Facebook is packed with goodies that make employees never want to leave.

27. Stand up to pressure, both internal and external
Zuck has a rare entrepreneurial skill that allows him to have an amazing vision. His courage to stand up to the pressures, both internal and external, helps keep him on course and never steers him away from his goals.

28. Don’t rest
even when you’re ahead “Creating the culture of urgency, staying in the state of permanent beta, not resting on [and] its laurels. That is something a lot of leaders are struggling with, especially once they reach some level of success. The hacker culture that Zuck created is the key to its continuous innovation and fluid adaptability,” says Ekaterina Walter, author of “Think Like Zuck.”

29. Be fearless
Zuckerberg’s youth allows him to promote an environment of fearlessness. This empowers Facebook employees to innovate and execute on their ideas. It also fosters passion, curiosity and creativity. Both believing in the impossible and not dismissing ideas have greatly contributed to Facebook’s success.

30. Finishing is more important that perfection
Zuckerberg famously said, “Done is better than perfect.” A great CEO acknowledges that no one is perfect, but finishing something is paramount. If you finish something, you can always go back and improve on it, but doing your best is what counts.

Missing Fisher Men Found After Being Lost At Sea For 3 Days

The pair set out from Gourdon in Aberdeenshire[SWNS] David Irvine, 35, and Jim Reid, 75, were feared dead when they failed to return from a trip in their 16ft long boat The Water Rail on Tuesday.
A major search was launched for the pair as their anxious family kept a quayside vigil. The Coastguard, Royal Air Force, lifeboats, fishing boats and the Police Scotland helicopter were all involved in the effort.
They focused on an area between Gourdon, Aberdeenshire, from where the boat set off, to Todhead Point and out in the North Sea.  Hopes of them returning home alive had faded when the weather further deteriorated and the search was called off.

But amazingly, the two men were found alive at sea approximately 46 miles off the coast of Montrose after being spotted by a passing fishing vessel at around 8am this morning. Fisherman Mark Spence, from Buckie, was one of the rescuers. He said: "My night was awful boring until we came across the two lads that've been lost at sea for three days now. "Got the lads on board safe and sound. "Now towing their boat to Montrose to get them ashore. "Both men safe and sound."
They are currently making their way to shore where they will be reunited with their families. A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesman said: "We are delighted that the missing fishermen have been found and that they will be reunited with their families shortly. "

The pair are currently on board the fishing boat which found them and are heading towards land and will be transferred to an all-weather lifeboat or search and rescue helicopter shortly to bring them ashore.

Britain's On Flood Alert, Storms To Bring Half a month's Rain in One Day

The Met Office has warned the South to expect more than 1.5 inches of rain[NC] More than half a month’s rainfall is expected today with warnings that torrential downpours could lash the UK throughout the weekend. The Met Office has issued a severe weather alert for rain across the South, where more than 1.5 inches is likely to fall in a few hours.

It said huge swathes of the country can expect a deluge today with more of a drenching to come, causing chaos for travellers getting away for the bank holiday weekend. Forecaster Dan Williams warned last night that a band of heavy rain was moving in from the Continent and due to hit the South-east. He said: “There is some intense rain expected in places, it is looking pretty heavy in parts as it moves across the country. “It will continue to move north-westwards, and behind there is another area of deep instability. "

The warning area is quite large and there could be some heavy thundery showers. "There are still heavy showers around at the weekend though not quite as bad.” Chief forecaster Martin Young warned last night of a weather front coming across southern England and into Wales this morning. "

This brings the threat of some heavy rain for a time,” he said. “Totals of more than 1.5 inches are likely in places.” Forecasters predict an improvement by bank holiday Monday with temperatures hitting 72F (22C) in the South though cooler elsewhere. Drivers should be prepared for extra traffic and possible delays [GETTY] There is some intense rain expected in places, it is looking pretty heavy in parts as it moves across the country Dan Williams, forecaster Leon Brown, forecaster for The Weather Channel, said: “There will be a slow improvement through the weekend with the South possibly dry and fine on Sunday, more showers from North Wales to the northern Midlands. “Monday sees higher pressure and much of the UK having a fine day. "The best of the sunshine will be in the morning with more cloud building for the afternoon. "Temperatures 66F to 71F in central to southern England.”

Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: “Monday and Tuesday is looking fairly good.” The Environment Agency has eight flood alerts in place across the South including regions still at risk after the winter storms. A spokesman said: “[It is] unsettled for the next three days with some areas of thundery showers and heavy rainfall affecting parts of England and Wales which has the potential to generate some localised surface water flooding and river flooding in small catchments. “

This band of rain and heavy showers continues to move north to affect all parts of England and Wales. “As it does so, it brings a low river flood risk to parts of the South, South-east and South-west of England and south Wales and a low surface water flood risk and brings the possibility of localised flooding of land and roads, individual properties, and some travel disruption.”

This year’s spring bank holiday is expected to be one of the busiest on the roads for years as it coincides with the start of half term.

The AA expects some 17 million cars to cause delays and congestion on popular routes from tomorrow afternoon. Spokesman Mark Spowage said: “Whatever the weather, drivers should be prepared for extra traffic and possible delays on major routes to coastal areas and holiday resorts.” RAC spokesman Matt Dallaway predicted Saturday would be the busiest day on the roads. He said: “Large numbers of people are expected to be out and about making the most of the time off.”

I was forced To Lie Between The Bodies of My Father And My Brother-15 Year-Old Boko Haram Survivor.

Leadership News reports:

At 7:30pm, three men knocked on the door. My brother answered the door because he recognized one of the men as a Muslim in our community. The men asked where my dad was and I told them he was in the shower. The men waited. After three minutes, they went into the bathroom and dragged my dad into the main room. They said that my dad was wasting their time and that they did not have time to wait on him. The men told my dad that he should deny his Christian faith. My dad told them that he would not deny his faith.
They said that if he did not deny his faith they were going to kill him. My dad refused, saying that Jesus said whoever acknowledges him in front of man will be acknowledged in front of God. My dad said he would rather die than go to hellfire. After he told the men that, the men shot him three times in his chest. My brother was in shock. He started demanding, What did my dad do to you? Why did you shoot him? The men told him to be quiet or else they were going to shoot him too. Then, the men discussed whether they should kill my brother. One of the Boko Haram people said they should kill Caleb, my brother. The second man said that he was just a boy and that he was too young to be killed. But the third man said that they should make an exception in this case because Caleb would only grow up to be a Christian pastor. Caleb asked me to plead with them for his life but they told me to shut up or they would kill me too. The leader agreed that they should kill him and shot my brother two times.

My dad was still breathing but when he saw them shoot Caleb, he died. My brother fell down but was still alive gasping. The men shot him in his mouth. Then my brother stopped moving and died. I was in shock. I did not know what was happening. The men put me in the middle of my dad and brothers corpses, told me to be quiet or be killed, and left me there. I stayed there until the next day when the army came. They removed my dad and brothers bodies and took me to the hospital. I was traumatized.

A nearby pastor paid for me to get out of town when he discovered that Boko Haram members said they made a mistake by not also killing me. Boko Haram decided later that they should have killed me because I am a daughter of an apostate Muslim mother who converted to Christianity. So the pastor paid for me to get out of that region. I fled and Jubilee Campaign helped me to come to a 9/11 Child Survivors Terrorism Camp in America. On May 15, 2013, that pastor, Rev. Faye Pama, was killed by Boko Haram in front of his kids.

My mum graduated from Chibok – Deborah Peters I decided to tell the world my story when I heard about the kidnapping of over 200 female students in Chibok because everyone needs to know how horrible Boko Haram is.

And also my mum graduated from the school where they were kidnapped.

Soyinka Says he Has Never Referred To First Lady As Illiterate

Professor Wole Soyinka in a statement released yesterday to media houses said that while he may have publicly chastised First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, he has never referred to her as an illiterate. He said his name is being falsely used to disrespect the first lady and will take legal action once he finds out the source of the lies.

Soyinka's statement reads below;

"It commenced over a year ago, I seem to recollect, as a telephone text, 'tweet' or whatever it is called, died away after strong rebuttals, and is now being provided renewed life by some faceless cowards with their own private agenda. Let me state quite clearly that literacy is no indicator of intelligence, even though we all believe (I hope) in universal literacy.
From childhood I have interacted with so-called "illiterate" men and women, sipped from their innate intelligence, and learnt much from them outside formal schooling"...  "Your readers may wish to know that when I first encountered the statement, I was sufficiently appalled to send a personal message to Patience Jonathan dissociating myself from such a base sentiment. The associated commentary on the president's decisions - I have no idea which decision, if any - is equally outrageous and disgusting. To attribute to me the slightest interest in the choice of a spouse by man or woman is a complete travesty of my near obsessive belief in the sanctity of private relationships"

“Let me take this opportunity to announce yet again that I do not tweet, blog or whatever goes on in this increasingly promiscuous medium. I do not run a Facebook, even though I am aware that one or two serious-minded individuals/groups have instituted some such forum on their own, for the purpose of disseminating factual information on my activities. I neither contribute to, nor comment on the contents of their "calendar".

"These personnel will support the operation of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft for missions over northern Nigeria and the surrounding area. The force will remain in Chad until its support in resolving the kidnapping situation is no longer required."

According to a senior official, the troops deployment is not based on any new intelligence leads.

Nigerian Military Sights Abducted Chibok Schoolgirls in 3 Boko Haram Camps

Exclusive report by Premium Times

Read below...

Nigeria’s Special Forces from the Army’s 7th Division have sighted and narrowed the search for the more than 250 abducted Chibok schoolgirls to three camps operated by the extremist Boko Haram sect north of Kukawa at the western corridors of the Lake Chad, senior military and administration officials have said. “It has been a most difficult but heroic breakthrough,” one senior military official said in Abuja. That claim was supported by another senior commander from the Army’s 7th Division, the military formation created to deal with the insurgency in the Northeast. The 7th Division is headquartered in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. The breakthrough comes at a critical moment for the Nigerian military that has faced cutting criticism over its handling of the kidnapping of the girls more than a month ago. The news is also key for the Maiduguri-based 7th Division a week after a humiliating mutiny by troops of its 101 battalion who fired at the General Officer Commanding the division, Ahmadu Mohammed, a Major General. Maj. Gen. Mohammed escaped unhurt, but has since been redeployed. The soldiers blamed him for the deaths of at least four of their colleagues killed near Chibok, a remote community in Borno State where the girls were taken captives April 14. But military insiders said Mr. Mohammed was targeted for daring to arrest the growing indiscipline within his troop. The abductions have sparked international outrage, with the United States, United Kingdom, France and Israel, providing intelligence and surveillance assistance. Nigerian military officials coordinating the search and other officials in Abuja said Boko Haram insurgents split the girls into batches and held them at their camps in Madayi, Dogon Chuku and Meri, all around the Sector 3 operational division of the Nigerian military detachment confronting the group’s deadly campaign. Another source said there is a fourth camp at Kangarwa, also in Borno State. That claim could not be independently verified. “Our team first sighted the girls on April 26 and we have been following their movement with the terrorists ever since,” one of our sources said. “That’s why we just shake our heads when people insinuate that the military is lethargic in the search for the girls.” The location of the abducted girls – north east of Kukawa – opens a new insight into the logistic orientation of Boko Haram, responsible for thousands of deaths in a five-year long insurgency. President Goodluck Jonathan said the group has killed at least 12,000 people so far – that’s minus the hundreds killed in a car bomb on Tuesday in Jos and the about 10 murdered on Sunday in Kano in a suicide bombing. But the details established by the military shows that while the world’s attention is focused on the Sambisa forest reserves, about 330 kilometres south of Maiduguri, the terrorists mapped a complex mission that began at Chibok, and veered north east of Sambisa, before heading to west of Bama and east of Konduga. With the sighting, officials fear that Boko Haram militants may be seeking to create new options of escape all the way to Lo-gone-Et Chari in Cameroon to its Southeast, Lake Chad to its east and Diffa in Niger Republic to its north, providing a multiple escape options in the event of hostile ground operations against it. Notwithstanding the sighting, the government is said not to be considering the use of force against the extremists, a choice informed by concerns for the safety of the students. But with growing local and international pressure, a likely option may be for the authorities to enter into talks with the group, whose leader, Abubakar Shekau, in a May 12 video broadcast, called for dialogue and “prisoner” swap with the government. The government has ruled out that option in the open but knowledgeable sources in Abuja hinted at a possible “twin track” approach that includes open rejection and a closet engagement. “That option is not as bitter as you think in the face of the alternatives confronting us,” the source who has deep insight on the thinking of the administration, said. “Government is working hard to free the girls in less than one week, possibly before end of this week,” the source said. Defence spokesperson, Chris Olukolade, a Major General, told PREMIUM TIMES he would not comment on the ongoing rescue operation. “You don’t expect me to tell you that the girls have been sighted or have not been sighted,” Mr. Olukolade said. “I will only say our team are working hard and taking note of every information provided to ensure that our girls are rescued without delay.” Civic leader Shehu Sani who fired a letter to the Sultan of Sokoto and leader of Nigeria’s Muslim, however told PREMIUM TIMES that what must be done urgently is for the Sultan to summon all the influential Islamic clerics with credibility in the north and use them to reach out to the insurgents to release the girls. “As far as I know this has not been done and to expect the committee [headed by former army intelligence chief, Major General Sani Bako] now working to determine the situation of the Chibok abduction to help on this will be a waste of time,” Mr. Sani said.
