Nigerians eat too much rice – Audu Ogbeh


The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Chief Audu Ogbeh, on Wednesday in Abuja said Nigerian businessmen demanded 2.5 billion dollars (about N492 billion) a week for importation of goods and services into the country.
Ogbeh made this known in a meeting with officials of VICAMPRO, an indigenous Agro Company investing in production of Irish Potato on Wednesday in Abuja.
He said that the ministry was willing to support local investors with capacity to produce goods and save the country’s foreign exchange.
He said that the consumption of rice in the country was rising and that a lot of people were not aware that the rice had some degree of arsenic.

Imo militants ceasefire, surrender arms

Multi-national  oil companies operating in the oil-bearing communities of Oguta and Ohaji/Egbema council areas of Imo State, yesterday heaved a sigh of relief following the decision of a militant group, the  Niger Delta Avengers (NDA) and the Red Squad to surrender their arms and  ammunition to the Imo Sate Government.
The  ex-militants, who all wore Tee shirts with the inscription “Disarmament of Agitators Powered by the Niger Delta Youths Volunteer Peace Advocacy,” arrived the state Government House chanting solidarity songs and berated  the oil exploration companies operating in their communities for their insensitivity.
Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, who received the ex- militants in the presence of top security agencies in the Army, Police NSCDC and the DSS, commended the youths for surrendering their arms and ammunition.
“This is a rare display of patriotism and I want to assure you that security agencies would no longer invade your communities,” the governor said.

Unity Bank sacks 215 workers



Unity Bank Plc, yesterday sacked not less than 215 of its employees as part of its reengineering strategy for greater performance. According to information gathered from sources close to the bank, the workers were sacked for their inability to cope with the new ideas and strategy of the institution.
The bank is said to have made significant strides in its repositioning drive with the attraction of specialist skills to its workforce since the relocation of its head office from Abuja to Lagos in sync with its plan to grow market share in viable clusters of the retail market.

Eight-month-old, octogenarian, nonagenarian die in Lagos fire



No fewer than three people have lost their lives in separate fire incidents in the FESTAC Town, Badagry and Surulere areas of Lagos State.
While an eight-month-old baby was killed in FESTAC Town, a 90-year-old woman was burnt to death in Badagry, while an 83-year-old man died in the Surulere incident.
Our correspondents gathered that the fire that killed the baby, identified as Jessica Ifeanyichukwu, started at about 9pm on Sunday.
Her mother, Ndubuisi Ifeanyichukwu, was trying to put on the family generator downstairs when the incident happened at the family’s three-bedroomed apartment on Hakeem Agboola Crescent.
It was gathered that although the fire was not caused by the generator, it happened while Ndubuisi struggled to put on the generator.

‘Over 60m Nigerians Have Mental Disorder’


The Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, has said that over 60 million Nigerians have various degrees of mental disorder.
He told newsmen in Abeokuta, the state capital, that about 80 per cent of people move about with metal disorder without knowing or seeking for help, while 20-25 per cent live with a full blown mental disorder in the country.He said cases of mental challenges range from simple minor mood disorder to extreme cases of mental accreditation, adding that one out of every five Nigerians have an extreme mental disorder.
The commissioner said event that could trigger minor mood disorder that could finally lead to extreme mental illness are marital pressure, educational and economic pressure.

River Niger drying up, FG warns

Acting Auditor of the Federation, Mrs Florence Anyanwu, has raised the alarm that River Niger is drying up.
To save the river, the Federal Government, along with countries bordering the River Niger, has approved an environmental audit of the river.
Anyanwu disclosed this to newsmen at the end of the 6th Annual Meeting of African Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions Working Group on Environmental Audit (AFROSAI WGEA) yesterday in Abuja.
She said drying up of the river poses social, environmental and economic treat to the communities bordering the river.
“Talks are ongoing on the cooperative environmental audit project on River Niger by Niger Basin Authority consisting of Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Chad, Côte d’ Ivoire, Guinea, Mali, Niger and Nigeria,” she said.
When completed, the environmental audit will afford governments information they need to save the river.

Forget about Biafra, Buhari tells agitators

President Muhammadu Buhari, yesterday, told those agitating for the state of Biafra to perish the idea.
The president insisted Nigeria will remain indivisible.
He spoke in his hometown of Daura, in Katsina State, where he spent the Eid-el-Kabir holiday where he received  over 100 National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in Daura Local Government Area of the state.
“Tell your colleagues who want Biafra to forget about it,” said the president.
The president’s  spokeagainst the  backdrop of peaceful marches in the South East to mark the 17th anniversary of non-violent agitation for the actualisation of the state of Biafra. The anniversary march held in many towns in the South East and parts of the South South geo-political zones.

Miaaing cattle: The cattle men may be preparing for another attack this time, on the Aku Community


Less than one month after Fulani herdsmen attacked Attakwu Community in Enugu State where two persons were killed, the cattle men may be preparing for another attack this time, on the Aku Community in the Igbo-Etiti Local Council following the alleged disappearance of about 300 cows and slaughtering of about 10 others in the area.
Addressing a news conference in Enugu yesterday, the six traditional rulers of Aku, including the Chairman, Aku Traditional Rulers’ Council, Igwe V. O. Attah, expressed concern over a certain comment said to have been made in the presence of the police in the area, by one Alhaji Sadiq, of an imminent attack on Aku.
They therefore, urged the relevant authorities to view the threat with the gravity and urgency it deserves.
The community leaders recalled that on September 8, 2016, Sadiq, one of the leaders of the Fulani herdsmen in the South-East, raised the alarm that youths from Aku attacked the herdsmen’s camp near Aku Town, robbed them of N10, 000, butchered 10 cows and stole 300 cattle.

Second tremor hits Kaduna in 24 hours

Residents of Sambang Dagi in Jaba Local Government of Kaduna State witnessed another earth tremor in the early hours of Monday.
The incident occurred barely 24-hours after the first tremor was reported at Nok village about 20km away from Sambang.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the second vibration occurred around 4a.m Monday, leaving shocked residents scampering for safety.
It was not immediately clear whether there were casualties.
Earlier, the Kaduna State government had in a press statement, urged residents of the affected communities to remain calm.

Sallah: Troops kill suspected female suicide bomber in Borno



The troops of the Nigerian Army have killed a suspected female suicide bomber in Borno State.
The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said in a statement on Monday that the suspected bomber was killed at a checkpoint at the cattle market in Dikwa, Dikwa Local Government Area of the state.
He said that the troops on duty had to fire at her when she refused to obey the directive of the sentry on duty to stop and claimed to be on her way to Dikwa from Monguno to see her parents.
Usman said that the soldiers were proven right when the suspected female suicide bomber who was carrying ‘Person Borne Improvised Explosive Devices’ exploded and died on the spot.

Herdsmen carrying guns not Nigerians – Sultan


The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, says the so called Fulani herdsmen moving with guns, causing violence, fighting with farmers are not Nigerians, but foreign terrorists.
Abubakar stated this in his Eid el-Kabir message to the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria.
According to him, these are foreigners coming into Nigeria to cause a breach of the peace.
“They are therefore terrorists and should be treated as such by the Nigerian security agencies.
“The Nigerian herdsmen are very peace-loving and law abiding people,” he said.
The Sultan, who noted with concern that some ‘‘bad eggs” had infiltrated the Fulani herdsmen, challenged the security agencies to be proactive.

Nollywood actress, Queeneth Agbor, has denied reports that popular actress, Tonto Dike slept with a movie producer to get a lead role in a movie.
Agbor, who has become one of the most talked about actresses in the film industry, said her popularity had nothing to do with her roles in movies.

Female suspect strips naked in cell, police seek relatives



A female suspect in the custody of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba, Lagos State, has been taken by the police to the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Yaba, to determine her state of health.
The suspect, whose name had yet to be ascertained, was arrested after two missing siblings were found with her in Ojuwoye Market, Mushin.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the suspect had been creating confusion at the SCIID.
She was said to have stripped naked on numerous occasions, including the times she was taken out of her cell to give her statement to the police.

Corps member jumps out of speeding bus



The passengers of a luxury bus en route to Jos in Plateau State from Aba, Abia State, were thrown into confusion on Saturday after a corps members who was one of the passengers jumped out of the speeding bus.
He was, however, lucky to have escaped with broken limbs.
The corps member, identified as Pam, was reportedly being escorted by another corps member from Aba to his home after he allegedy developed a strange illness in the village where he was currently undergoing the compulsory one year service in Ebonyi State.

Nigerian Students Sue Alabama University for Treating Them ‘Like Animals’

Nigerian students namely Thankgod Harold, Success Jumbo, Savior Samuel, Godsgift Moses, Promise Owei and 30 others on full scholarships from a Nigerian government fund for four years have sued Alabama State University (ASU) for discrimination and treating them like animals, an Alabama news outlet, Daily Beast, has reported.
The students complained that after collecting millions of dollars from the home government, the university started to discriminate against them
In their lawsuit, they alleged that the university overcharged them for books and meals, claiming that the school enrolled them in classes they never took simply because they were black foreigners.

My name is Olayemi Olatilewa. Some people call me Olayemi Oniroyin, or Olayemi Dakewi. I graduated from Tai Solarin University of Education, Ogun state, where I studied Yoruba Language and Literature. I am a yoruba poet, I also write news. Soldiers kill 7 kidnappers, destroy camps in Bauchi

Soldiers on patrol duty in Bauchi State have killed seven suspected kidnappers and destroyed some camps belonging to hoodlums, the Army said yesterday.
Army spokesman, Colonel Sani Usman said in a statement that troops of 33 Brigade carried out the operation, following a tip-off, which brought them in contact with the suspected kidnappers at Lame Burra forest near Dutsen Ganye, Gunduru and Kati Layin villages, Bauchi State.
Usman said they recovered 2 AK-47 rifles and 3 Dane guns at the camp.
“The troops are still combing the general area to further track down other fleeing members of the criminal gang,” he said.

Patience Jonathan must explain how she earned billions – Sagay


The Chairman, Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), has said with the fresh admission by Patience Jonathan that she owns the $5m traced to her accounts by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, means the anti-graft agency has the right to probe her.
According to him, if the former first lady is claiming that she owns the money then she must explain how she earned it.
