The Michigan teen who fatally shot his brother after chillingly declaring, “let's see if it's your lucky day” sobbed in court as he learned he’ll spend up to 40 years behind bars.
Riley Spitler, 17, was sentenced to 20 to 40 years in prison Wednesday for the 2014 killing of his brother Patrick, the Jackson Citizen Patriot reported.
The teen was convicted in January of second-degree murder, which the boys’ father fiercely contested. Spitler told cops he pointed the gun at his brother, but didn’t expect it to go off.
“We understand Riley has to be punished, that he acted in a reckless manner, but I'm also his father and I don't want to lose my second son,” dad Brian Spitler told the court during the Wednesday sentencing hearing. “It is my contention the jury got the verdict wrong.”
Spitler cried as his father addressed the court.
