Bodies Of Dead Women Stolen From Graves For Ghost Weddings

This shocking practice has reached an alarming rate in the rural areas of China. It is believed that a newly deceased bachelor must be buried alongside a woman, The Sun UK reports.

The bizarre tradition says that elderly single men are given a ‘bride’ to be buried with when they die as it is considered bad luck to pass into the next life without a female companion.

It is also believed that the ghost wedding which was banned by China’s ruling Communist party,  prevents a dead bachelor relative from becoming restless and returning to ‘haunt and bring misfortune to the family’.

These dead brides are being sought after by families who desperate to complete their family tree, due to China’s gender imbalance.

According to reports, a body can go for as high as $20,000 and these desperate relatives are more than happy to pay for the corpse of a bride.

A shocked relative Li Fucai, told The Sun UK that his mother’s remains were dug up and stolen by thieves and his family have no idea where the body went.

“Who knows where they took my mother? She is now ill-gotten gains for thieves,” he said.

Another devastated man told the paper how the bodies of his great aunt and great-grandmother were stolen from their resting places.

“My grandmother must now be wandering other villages, experiencing a painful afterlife,” he said.

Ghost weddings were practices far back as 3000 years, but despite being banned under Communism, the belief still exists, particularly in rural areas.
