African countries have had a poor start in their first games in the group stages in the ongoing World Cup, with just one win (Ivory Coast 2-1 Japan), one draw (Nigeria 0 - 0 Iran) and three losses (Cameroon 0 -1 Mexico 1, USA 2 - 1 Ghana, Belgium 2 -1 Algeria). It is sure not the desired start for the five teams from Africa.
With tougher games to come for Cameroon, Nigeria, Ghana and Algeria, the danger signs are there for them. In Group A, Cameroon will play a resolute Croatian side and the host Brazil in their last two group matches after losing 1-0 to Mexico in their first game. A point from these two games will be a big achievement for Samuel Eto`o and co, making their progress to the next round seem impossible.
In Group C, Ivory Coast is the only African team to win their first group match and may progress to the next round. Gervinho and Wilfred Bony scored two goals in three minutes to give Drogba and co a winning start after Honda had given Japan an early lead. The Orange boys of Africa will have to see off either Colombia or Greece to stand any chance of making it to the next round.
