The two-month old feud between Senate and the Police Service Commission (PSC) over recruitment of 10,000 police officers, may soon be resolved, as indications emerged yesterday that the Presidency has stepped in.
The recruitment exercise was suspended two months ago following sharp disagreements over a formula to adopt in the recruitment.
Senate Committee on Police Affairs had wanted the recruitment to be based on nine persons per local government, but the PSC insisted on equality of states as a criterion.
Chairman of the committee, Senator Abu Ibrahim explained that the position of the Senate was informed by the need to ensure that more policemen were recruited from states with higher population and pointed out that the policy of community policing would be better enhanced if policemen are recruited from most rural areas in local government councils.
Before suspension of the exercise, Senate had, in a letter, asked the PSC to suspend the exercise over alleged irregularity in the criteria adopted for the recruitment.
Addressing newsmen, yesterday, Senator Ibrahim said the clash between the chamber and the PSC has been resolved.
“We have resolved the issue and the recruitment would be done on local government basis. Very soon the exercise will resume,” he said.

Miracle of Moses: How he has gone from loan outcast to a key Chelsea player

Chelsea's Brazilian-born Spanish striker Diego Costa (C) celebrates scoring their second goal with Chelsea's Nigerian midfielder Victor Moses (L) and Chelsea's Spanish defender Marcos Alonso (2L) during the English Premier League football match between Southampton and Chelsea at St Mary's Stadium in Southampton, southern England on October 30, 2016. The transition of Victor Moses from marauding forward to defensive-minded wing-back has been something of a miracle move by Chelsea manager Antonio Conte. The player has been wandering in the wilderness for the four years of his Stamford Bridge contract.

Not even 10 goals in his debut season following a £9million move from Wigan — signed by short-term manager Roberto Di Matteo — was deemed good enough and loan spells at Liverpool, Stoke and West Ham have come in the previous three seasons.

At 25-years-old, many players would have decided it was probably time to move on, but Conte arrived and Moses got his head down once again and the transformation has been spectacular. Even the Italian has been taken aback.

“I think Moses is a great surprise in this aspect because we know him as a winger, but I think he’s playing in a fantastic way,” Conte said after he shone once again in their victory against Southampton, overshadowed only by the resurgence of Eden Hazard and Diego Costa, who both scored. “I think that this role is very important in this system,” Conte added. “You must have good stamina and quality to play as a wing-back. I ask my wing-backs to do offensive and defensive duties.”

Moses’ resilience, however, should shock no-one. He coped with trauma at 12 years old that no child should have to endure.

How laughter boosts your mental health

face

Laughter is the best medicine, so goes a popular quote, which might be the reason why comedians like Alibaba, Bovi, Basket mouth and others have not only carved a niche for themselves in entertainment but   are also smiling to the bank.

When it comes to relieving stress, particularly in times like this in Nigeria where economic recession and political strife seem to be stifling our happiness and existence, more giggles and guffaws are just what the doctor recommends. In order to regain your sanity, have a good laugh. Scientists say it takes about 43 muscles around the face to frown and just 17 to smile. Laughter does you good. Laughter is a great form of stress relief.

Mental health is simply a level of psychological wellbeing or the absence of mental illness. According to World Health organization, WHO, mental health is defined as a state of wellbeing in which every individual realizes his or her potential, copes with the normal stresses of life, works productively and fruitfully and able to make a contribution to the community.
